WEAVING THE CARPET

Cappadocia is a famous carpet-making center of Turkey. Women make rugs of silk and wool in the double "Gordian" knot tradition. Each strand of wool or silk is placed by hand in a double knot. Even small rugs take months to make. Large rugs may take years of daily work. Some silk rugs have one million knots per square meter (39.77 inches square). Workers are shown here in a factory in Avanos, which is the largest in Turkey.

After seeing the entire process of producing silk rugs, we entered a large room with beautiful carpets covering the walls and floor. As we sat on the benches that lined the walls, the men began to unroll many of the ten thousand rugs on hand at the Avanos factory, which is the largest in the country of Turkey.
